Description:

Looking for an intellectually curious individual who wants to spend their time learning new things from interesting people, and finding ways to teach them to others. Must strongly believe in the Truman Democratic worldview and mission and want to work in a dynamic environment leading the nation’s only organization training a new generation of progressive national security leaders.

Duties would include:

• Delving into the curriculum for each of our training programs, improving it so that each program accomplishes its goal of creating effective, ethical leaders steeped in national security knowledge.

• Manage and expand the Truman National Security Project’s successful Congressional Security Scholars Program, a 12-week training on Capitol Hill for junior Congressional Staff offered each fall and spring. Improve curriculum, work on metrics for success, and expand the alumni program to build a strong network of Congressional staff.

• Direct and improve the Truman Project’s Summer Springboard for interns, a five week training on the basics of national security and communication for summer interns in Washington D.C.

• Create and direct our new Emerging Leaders program for 22-26 year olds seeking to be the next generation of national security policy and political leaders. Work with senior staff and experts in national security to build a nine-month biweekly curriculum of trainings, interactive learning, field trips, and other programming to create a cadre of progressive leaders steeped in national security, able to communicate effectively, thoughtful about the ethical issues confronted in security leadership, and poised to affect the public and political debate.

• Create the yearly curriculum for our Truman Fellows, progressive leaders 27-40 in ten cities nationwide. Work with our Membership Director to ensure substantive policy topics and philosophical/ethical discussions are integrated with communication training and experiential learning.

• Create new curriculum modules to be integrated across all of our training programs, such as a module on how the economic crisis affects our national security, Getting to Zero training on nuclear weapons, and a curriculum on Progressive Patriotism. Find relevant readings, create power

point trainings, determine how best to communicate difficult new material in easy, interactive ways that will be pedagogically appropriate to the audience.

• Take part as a senior staff member in leading the nation’s only organization dedicated to training a new generation of national-security minded progressives across the country.

Qualifications: Applicants should have strong people skills, interest and knowledge about foreign policy/national security policy, and a desire to be a leader of our organization. Interest in communication and pedagogy/how to teach – as well as basic knowledge about the subject matter, is important. Intellectual curiosity is a must.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30 am-6:00 pm. Offices in Washington, D.C. Expected to take senior staff role, working as needed to get jobs completed to high level of quality.

Pay: Dependent on experience; family health benefits and good vacation package.
