Manager of Security Programs

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) seeks an articulate, creative, and experienced professional to join PSR as the Manager of its Security Programs.  The goal of the Security Program is to assert a strong medical voice for the prevention of nuclear war, against the development and use of nuclear weapons, and for a reduction in the role of armed force in US foreign and security policy, emphasizing alternative strategies for conflict resolution, including increased scientific engagement, diplomacy and the rule of law.  Our work focuses on advocacy and policy change at the national and grassroots levels.

The Manager of Security Programs will report to the Director of Security and will work closely with the National Field Director as well as website communications and development staff.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Security and other program staff to develop and implement Security campaigns and message development. Tasks will include writing and analysis, updating website, advocacy efforts, media alerts, and preparing and disseminating educational materials.
  • Work closely with the Security and Field Directors to prepare Security issue briefs regarding ongoing program initiatives.
  • Produce and coordinate e-actions and other on-line activities and assist with activist and health professional recruitment.
  • Deliver and support PSR Board Members in delivering educational presentations, Hill briefings, panel presentations and medical/ public health conference presentations.
  • Work closely with Security staff and consultants to evaluate, update, produce and distribute educational resources and tools for health professionals, including but not limited to briefing papers, fact sheets, trainings, advocacy tools, voter education materials, brochures, etc.
  • Attend Security community meetings, e.g. Nuclear Weapons Working Group and Security Program Board Committee meetings when needed,
  • Facilitate the effective use of PSR's many knowledgeable volunteer leaders to conduct research and publish comprehensive reports on the health effects of nuclear weapons, nuclear power, and associated waste management.
  • Assist in the management of grants and drafting of foundation and other donor proposals and reports, coordinate and monitor Security Program priorities to ensure project and foundation grant timelines are met, assist with donor prospecting, and contribute to major donor and direct mail efforts.
  • Recruit and supervise interns and research assistants.

 

Qualifications:

 

-               Smart, hard working, professional team member ready and willing to undertake necessary tasks,

  • Strong work ethic with can do attitude and passion for peace and security issues,
  • B.A. or M.A. in relevant field,
  • Significant work on nuclear arms control and disarmament issues, preferably with a non-profit advocacy organization,
  • Experience working in a team environment,
  • Experience writing grant proposals and reports,
  • Understanding and appreciation for importance of utilizing a vibrant grassroots network to accomplish program goals,
  • Excellent and proven analytical, organizational, written and oral communications, time-management, and teamwork skills; attention to detail; ability to juggle competing priorities,
  • Prior public speaking experience,
  • Publication in relevant journals in the field of nuclear nonproliferation or policy a plus, but not required,
  • Strong interest in working on the health effects of nuclear issues and in a fast-paced, challenging and progressive setting,
  • Significant computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and experience in advancing program goals utilizing the internet and electronic advocacy.
