The needs expressed here are all important.  It is also important to find a way to pay for meeting them.  Every year, Women’s Action for New Directions and NETWORK, A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby lead a letter to Congress calling for redirecting excessive Pentagon spending to other needs.  Our 2008 budget letter is included here.  This letter is for national and regional groups to sign.  If yours is interested, please contact Marie Rietmann/Women’s Action for New Directions at rietmann@wand.org.  In our 2009 letter, we will call for eliminating the entire increase in the Pentagon budget (not just that beyond the inflationary increase) and the letter will call for redirecting that amount to several areas of unmet needs including human needs.  The letter will be sent to House and Senate members prior to their consideration of the FY10 budget resolution and the FY10 appropriations subcommittee allocations.  Deadline for signing the 2009 letter is expected to be early March.
