The National Security Network (NSN), the political voice of the progressive national security community, is filling two positions for its policy team.  Our policy unit comprises 3-4 individuals who report to the Deputy Director/Chief Operating Officer and who work as a team to advance progressive national security policies with Administration policy makers, Members of Congress and their aides, political campaigns, the think tank and advocacy communities, and the media.  Team members will partner with our communications and outreach teams to ensure that our media work and national events are infused with the best policy content.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily Updates: Each day, as part of a team, draft a 2-3 page memo for wide distribution on a key national security/foreign policy issue and the progressive response;
  • New Media: Provide fast-breaking, savvy responses and commentary on breaking events, via blogging and rapid-turnaround short policy documents;
  • Policy Content: Maintain a high level of insight, develop NSN task forces, and contribute to community deliberations on priority national security issues, including but not limited to: nonproliferation, Afghanistan/Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, the Middle East, defense policy, counter-terrorism and human rights/civil liberties, and climate security.
  • Policy Support: Prepare talking points, point-counterpoint responses, and other short advisory documents for advocates and policymakers who are looking for support to effectively advance the pragmatic, principled policy approaches that NSN advocates

 

We will be filling two positions immediately:

 

Policy Researcher/Nonproliferation Project Manager: will join our policy team with particular responsibility to NSN's lead role in a rapid response coalition in support of the President's nonproliferation agenda. The individual will be responsible for following the issue, leading blogging, and coordinating rapid response, events and policy among our policy, media and outreach teams.  The successful candidate will have:

  • BA in relevant field
  • At least one year's experience in the public policy field
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to work in fast in a fast-paced and informal office
  • Demonstrated interest/expertise on nonproliferation and willingness to pick up other issues as needed.
  • Proven project management skills.

Policy Coordinator will manage the process of developing our daily update and work under the direction of the chief operating officer to set policy priorities for task forces, blogging and writing.  The successful candidate will have:  

  • MA in international relations, public policy, or related field
  • 3-5 Years professional experience in international affairs or public policy
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to work collegially in fast in a fast-paced and informal office
  • Demonstrated expertise and track record on a specific policy area but be able to coordinate policy across our issue set
  • Comfort/familiarity with the political process
  • Desire to establish her/himself as a credible policy voice
